Reading
Reading has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. Reading enables pupils to acquire knowledge. Literature plays a key role in a child’s development. Through reading, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually.
As skilled readers, children need to develop fluency through the use of decoding skills and word recognition. To comprehend a text fully they must have a secure grasp of the vocabulary; be able to retrieve information; infer thoughts, feelings and motives based on actions; make reasoned predictions; summarise a section of text; and explain authorial intent.
